Senegal must pay fine to play basketball World Cup
DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — Senegal must pay the international basketball association around $650,000 in unpaid dues and fines for age cheating in junior tournaments before it can compete in this year’s World Cup in Spain.
Serigne Mboup, chairman of a temporary committee running Senegalese basketball, says its financial situation is “catastrophic” and it “would take a miracle” for Senegal to compete at the showcase.
Mboup says it owes annual dues to FIBA for 2012 and 2013 and was fined around $620,000 for having overage players on both its victorious boys’ and girls’ teams at the under-18 African championships in 2012.
Mboup says the outstanding money must be paid to FIBA by Monday, when the draw for the World Cup in August and September will be made. Senegal qualified as one of three African countries.
