Croatia reaches World Cup final...Sad tune for Jagger...Federer bounced
MOSCOW (AP) — Croatia has reached the World Cup final for the first time after beating England 2-1 in extra time in Moscow. Mario Mandzukic scored the game-winning goal in the second half of extra time to set up a Sunday match against France. England which won the World Cup on home soil in 1966, will play Belgium in the third-place game on Saturday.
MOSCOW (AP) — Mick Jagger was not the lucky charm for England in its World Cup semifinal against Croatia. The Rolling Stones frontman was in attendance at Luzhniki Stadium Wednesday and saw Croatia beat England 2-1 in extra time. Last year, Jagger released a solo song called “England Lost,” which starts with someone ostensibly going to watch England play a soccer match and later comments on Britain’s exit from the European Union.
LONDON (AP) — At Wimbledon, defending champion Roger Federer was up two sets against South African Kevin Anderson and had a match point in the third set but Anderson rallied for a 2-6, 6-7. 7-5, 6-4, 13-11 quarterfinal win. Top-ranked Rafael Nadal beat Juan Martin del Potro in five sets and American John Isner reached his first Grand Slam semifinal by beating Milos Raonic (MEE’-lohsh ROW’-nich) of Canada in four sets.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Washington Nationals’ struggles continued this afternoon in Pittsburgh where the Pirates blanked the Nationals 2-0. Trevor Williams combined with four relievers on a five-hitter and Starling Marte (mar-TAY’) belted a two-run home run. The Nationals have lost 11 of their last 16 games.
UNDATED (AP) — Brian Dozier’s two-run home run helped the Minnesota Twins top the Kansas City Royals 8-5. It was Dozier’s second straight game with a homer. A three-run, seventh inning home run from C.J. Cron sent the Tampa Bay Rays to a 4-2 home win over the Detroit Tigers. It was the fifth straight win for the Rays.
