Royals Recall Berroa From Minors
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) _ Shortstop Angel Berroa, last season’s AL Rookie of the Year, was recalled by the Kansas City Royals on Monday after a brief stint in the minors.
Berroa, sent to Double-A Wichita on Aug. 10, filled the roster spot left vacant when shortstop Andres Blanco was optioned to Wichita following Sunday’s game.
Berroa, who went 0-for-4 in his first game back, is batting .247 with five home runs and 30 RBIs.
Last season, he hit .287 with 17 homers and 73 RBIs and was rewarded in May with a four-year, $11 million contract.
Berroa was 12-for-42 (.286) in nine games with Wichita and didn’t make an error.
``He knows why we sent him down,″ manager Tony Pena said after Monday night’s 9-4 loss to the Anaheim Angels.
``This ballclub had not played well the whole year and he wanted to do more than what he was capable of doing. He started pressing and tried to carry the ballclub all by himself, so we sent him down just to get him to relax and come back playing the way he’s capable of playing.″
