Spring Valley smashes Cabell Midland in clash of AAA heavyweights

September 8, 2018

ONA — Spring Valley’s football team could be described as a stone wall with a revolving door Friday night.

A wall-like defense and three rotating quarterbacks combined with a strong rushing attack to give the Timberwolves a 35-7 victory over Cabell Midland at the Castle.

The game was delayed 70 minutes by lightning.

Spring Valley’s defense set up its offense on the game’s first drive, as Graeson Malashevich intercepted a Jayce Gould pass and returned it 11 yards to the Knights’ 35. Eight plays later, fullback Isaac Howard burst through the left side for a touchdown that, followed by Zane Porter’s extra point, gave the Timberwolves a 7-0 lead at 6:50 of the first quarter.

Except for one play, Spring Valley’s defense dominated the first half. That play, however, was a big one as the Timberwolves bit on a play-action fake by Gould, who threw an 88-yard touchdown pass to Carlito Carter. Cameron Grobe’s extra point tied it 7-7.

Spring Valley came right back, moving 78 yards in five plays, capped by a 43-yard touchdown pass from Will Adkins to Nate Ellis, who started the game at quarterback. The extra point attempt was blocked.

The Adkins-to-Ellis TD was set up by a 32-yard burst through the middle for a first down at the Cabell Midland 43.

The Timberwolves scored a key touchdown to begin the third quarter as Chafin carried a defender three yards into the end zone to complete a 17-yard run to make it 21-7.

Spring Valley scored again as Malashevich, quarterbacking out of the wildcat formation, threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Ellis, making it 28-7.

The Timberwolves went back to their rushing attack for the final touchdown, a 9-yard run by Howard to finish a six-play, 46-yard drive, all on the ground.

The Knights struggled with poor field position most of the night and couldn’t get its usually formidable running game going, finishing with 41 yards on 23 carries and 129 total yards. Senior all-state tailback Ivan Vaughn ran 15 times for 35 yards.

Spring Valley gained 366 yards, 282 rushing, with Malashevich gaining 103 yards on 16 attempts and Chafin 100 on 20 tries.
