Burlington families continue Thanksgiving football rivalry

November 26, 2018

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Bitter cold didn’t stop a decades-old tradition between two Burlington families playing an annual game of football on Thanksgiving morning.

The annual Turkey Bowl between the Finnigan and Mahoney families went on as planned, though they say they had a lower turnout this year. Joe Finnigan tells MyNBC5 that there was about a third of the amount of people there would usually be at the annual game.

The Turkey Bowl started almost 60 years ago and has drawn in non-family members, like Mike Wynard who says he has been participating in the tradition for the last 16 years.

Michael Mahoney says the game might be one of the only times the families get to see each other all year.
