KOBE, Japan (AP) _ Japan blanked the United States 2-0 and China, scoring four goals within eight minutes in a late first-half blitz, trounced Mexico 5-0 Friday in preliminary soccer games at the 1985 Universiade.

Although the Americans outshot the Japanese 12-10, Japan’s Yasuharu Kurata scored in the 35th minute and Takashi Sekizuka added a goal in the last minute of the game, played before 2,500 spectators.

Asian teams now have won all four preliminary games played before the formal opening ceremonies on Saturday for the World University Games.

On Thursday, South Korea beat England 6-2 and North Korea blanked Uruguay 2-0. Kuwait, West Germany, Algeria and France also are in the soccer competition.

China’s scoring blitz gave it a 5-0 halftime lead. Mexico had three near misses in the second half, including two sharp-angle shots by second-half replacement Juan Carlos Puente, but was unable to score.

Playing before about 3,100 spectators, Wu Qunli scored China’s first goal in the 10th minute, putting in an angled shot after a long pass from Wang Dongning bounced over the head of Mexican goalie Salvador Cisneros, who rushed out of the goal trying to intercept the ball.

Wu scored again in the 33rd minute, heading in a cross from Li Huajun. Then Wang scored in the 37th minute on a 2-on-1 break, Chen Dong scored in the 39th minute on a quick attack and Ma Lin scored in the 41st minute on a pass that Wu kicked backward over his head from in front of the goal.
