Five Die in Trailer Fire in N.Y.

December 16, 2000

NORTH LAWRENCE, N.Y. (AP) _ A mother, her three children and another child died early Saturday when a fire destroyed their trailer home near the Canadian border.

Investigators say a faulty furnace may have caused the blaze, which killed the trailer’s owner, Diane Delosh, 25; her three children, ages 6 months, 2 and 8; and an 8-year-old cousin.

Delosh’s boyfriend, Wayne E. Crump, 24, escaped the blaze that began around 2:30 a.m. and alerted family members who called for help. Crump, who was the father of two of the children, tried to get back into the trailer, but he and other rescuers failed.

Firefighters found the trailer completely ablaze when they arrived.

``There are no words for such a tragedy whether it’s Christmas time or any time of the year. It’s just horrible,″ said town supervisor Victor Burnett.

North Lawrence is about 20 miles from the Canadian border.
