Speaker: No assurances state budget will be on time
BOSTON (AP) — House Speaker Robert DeLeo says he’s not sure if lawmakers will be able to complete work on the state’s $38 billion budget before the state’s new fiscal year begins.
The Legislature has delivered an annual budget to the governor’s desk no later than July 1, the first day of the fiscal year, in each of the last six years. But DeLeo indicated that streak could be in jeopardy.
Lawmakers approved a one-month interim spending plan that was signed by Gov. Charlie Baker on Wednesday.
Both legislative chambers have passed versions of the budget, but there are some key differences on taxes, the MBTA and other issues.
DeLeo told reporters after a private meeting of House Democrats that Senate and House negotiators are still talking, which he called a “good sign.”
