Louisiana flags ordered at half-staff for former lawmaker

August 23, 2018

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Gov. John Bel Edwards is ordering flags to be flown at half-staff at the Louisiana Capitol and all public buildings around the state, in honor of a former state lawmaker who died last week.

The Democratic governor’s executive order, announced Thursday, directs the flags to be lowered Friday until sunset, as funeral services for former Rep. Charlie Lancaster are held.

Lancaster, a Jefferson Parish Republican, died at the age of 74 after a heart attack. He had represented the New Orleans suburb of Metairie in the House of Representatives for 32 years and helped to build the modern Republican Party in Louisiana.

In a statement, Edwards praised Lancaster as serving “the people of his district and this state with distinction and dedication” and working across party lines.
