Air France Prepared for Strike

May 5, 1998

PARIS (AP) _ Air France said it can guarantee the departure of the majority of its flights within France and Europe despite a strike called for Wednesday by pilots’ unions.

Air France said Tuesday that 90 percent of the flights from Charles de Gaulle airport north of Paris would take off, while 70 percent of those from Orly airport south of Paris would fly.

All long-distance flights will run on schedule, the airline said in a statement.

Three pilots’ unions, representing about 14 percent of Air France’s 8,200 pilots, said Monday they would stage a one-day strike against the state-owned carrier.

The unions want Air France to limit pilots’ flights to four per day and to drop the lower salary scale paid to new pilots since June 1997.
