Sutherlin ‘wins ugly’ against Douglas, 1-0
SUTHERLIN — Senior goalie Joaquin Vicencio got some much needed help from freshman defender Connor Cooley as Sutherlin took a ragged 1-0 victory over Douglas on Tuesday in a Class 3A/2A/1A Special District 4 boys soccer match.
Aldo Alcantar scored on a penalty kick in the 20th minute after Douglas was called for a handball.
“It was kind of an ugly game,” SHS coach Rick Murphy said. “I think Douglas wanted it more. They were faster than us and they pushed at us. They forced us into their kind of game, which was just kicking it, but an ugly win is an ugly win.”
Murphy specifically credited Cooley’s play on the back line for helping Vicencio to keep the shutout intact.
The Bulldogs (4-4-1, 4-2-1 SD4) have now won more games and scored more goals (16) than at any point in the previous three seasons.
“We’re still trying to figure out how to win and what it takes to win,” Murphy said. “We have to teach them you’re better than you believe. We’re still learning.”
Douglas (2-4-1, 2-4-1 SD4) slipped into fifth place in the league. The Trojans will play at South Umpqua on Thursday.
Sutherlin plays at league-leading Brookings-Harbor on Thursday.
