Spadea, Dent Advance at AAPT Tennis
ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) _ American Vincent Spadea, the No. 2 seed, beat Jurgen Melzer of Austria 7-6 (4), 6-2 in his first-round match at the AAPT Championships on Monday.
Fellow American Taylor Dent also won his opening match with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Luis Horna of Peru.
Sweden’s Thomas Johansson returned from a 14-month layoff to beat Belgium’s Christophe Rochus 6-1, 6-3. Johansson, the 2002 Australian Open champion, had been forced off the circuit by a knee injury.
Other first-round winners included Michael Llodra of France, Slovakia’s Karol Beck, Sweden’s Stanislas Wawrinka and Frenchman Julien Benneteau.
Top-seeded Wayne Ferreira of South Africa is scheduled to play Australian wild-card Todd Reid on Tuesday.
