Winona State women’s soccer blanks Wayne State 2-0

Winona State scored goals in each half to post a 2-0 win over Wayne State Sunday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference women’s soccer played at Altra Federal Credit Stadium in Winona, Minnesota. The host Warriors improve to 4-5-1 and 4-4-1 in league games while WSC falls to 3-7-1 on the season and 3-5-1 in NSIC contests.

The Wildcats came out aggressive early in the contest, recording four shots and a corner kick in the first 15:00 of the contest, but could not score.

Winona State opened the scoring at the 39:59 mark of the first half as Riley Harmon found the back of the net with a blast from the top of the box with an assist from Kara Schramel to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead at intermission.

The Warriors added to their lead early in the second half as Courtney Wiencek scored on a corner kick to put Winona State in front 2-0.

Wayne State had just three shots in the second half and one on goal as the Wildcats suffered the 2-0 loss.

Winona State ended with a 12-7 advantage in shots over the Wildcats including 9-2 in shots on goal. The Warriors had one more corner kick than WSC, 3-2, while both teams were called for eight fouls.

Freshman Megan Phillips was credited with both shots on goal for the Wildcats while Rylie Wehner, Megan Schuster, Alexis Strothers, Christina Stasi and Rachel Fraser each recorded shots.

Freshman goalkeeper Alyssa Bagley recorded seven saves while allowing two goals in the contest.
