Male inmate dies in Aiken County jail Monday morning
The Aiken County Coroner’s Office has identified the inmate who died early Monday morning at the Aiken County detention center.
Harry S. Smith, 46, of Blythe, Georgia, was found unresponsive in a holding cell at the detention center at 4:45 a.m. Monday, said Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton in a release.
Emergency medical treatment was rendered, and EMS was notified of the situation, according to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.
Smith was pronounced dead about 20 minutes after he was discovered unresponsive in the holding cell, Carlton said.
Smith was arrested Sunday at approximately 8:30 p.m. at a Clearwater motel and was charged with gross intoxication and disorderly conduct, according to the release.
Smith was last seen alive at approximately 4 a.m. in a holding cell by himself, Carlton said.
Cause and manner of death have not been determined. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday in Newberry.
“At this time there are no concerns about foul play or suspicious circumstances,” Carlton said in the release. “There were no injuries or trauma noted.”
The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office also called in the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to investigate the death.
