19 Hurt in Pileup on Va. Beltway

August 11, 1998

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) _ Nineteen people _ eight children and 11 senior citizens _ were injured Tuesday in a six-vehicle pileup on the Capital Beltway surrounding Washington, D.C., Virginia State Police said.

A tractor-trailer truck sparked the chain of collisions when it veered to the right, forcing a Kinder Care van carrying children to merge into another lane, said police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell.

``The van was in my blind spot,″ said the tractor-trailer driver, Wayne Oxton, 36, of Union, Maine. ``By the time I realized it, I pulled back into my lane ... and I looked into my rear and saw the van go out of control.″ He was charged with reckless driving.

The accident also involved two other tractor trailers, a pickup truck and a Sunrise Community Van from Lorton, Va., carrying senior citizens.

The one child hospitalized was listed in good condition at Inova Fairfax Hospital. The other children and the senior citizens were treated and released. None of the truck drivers was injured, Caldwell said.
