YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) _ Marcus Culbreth scored 22 points to help Youngstown State beat Troy State 90-80 Saturday night in the Mid-Continent Conference.

The visiting Trojans came in averaging 97.7 points per game and the Penguins were the leading defensive team in the conference. In the first half, defense was the rule. Youngstown State led 28-27 at halftime.

The tempo picked up considerably in the second half. Matt McMurray scored his only basket with 13:28 left to put the Penguins ahead 44-42, and they led the rest of the way.

Leroy King scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Youngstown State (8-8, 3-5).

Troy State (6-11, 3-5) shot just 39.4 percent. The Trojans tried 29 3-pointers and made 11. Rhodney Donaldson led Troy State with 21 points. Jermaine Ball added 18 points.
