Hillside Terrace apartments serves free lunches to children

June 11, 2018

Hillside Terrace Apartments in Coldspring is easing the burden on families to feed their children during the summer months when meals are not readily available through school.

The meals are available to any child 18 and younger. According to Property Manager Kathy Hale, this is the first year the complex has provided meals.

“They’ll be served every Monday, Wednesday and Friday,” she said.

The apartment complex is in a partnership with the Houston Food Bank. Many of the meals are hot lunches but cold lunches are served on occasion.

Hale says Hillside Terrace apartments started serving meals this summer to address a need for families who often take their children to the local school districts to participate in summer meal programs.

“There are a lot of families that rely on the school system,” said Hale.

The lunches are not limited to children living at the complex.

“It’s for anyone in the community,” said Hale.

Hillside Terrace served 11 children on June 4 with only a handful coming two days later. Hale encourages anyone looking to feed a child to come by the complex as it is able to serve more meals.

“Houston Food Bank is prepared to send as many meals as we can distribute,” she said.

Lunches are going to be served at the Hillside Terrace apartments until Aug. 17. Anyone who wishes to receive a meal for their child need only to bring them to the apartment complex from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Children only need to be 18 years of age or younger.
