Joye in Aiken begins the week with downtown jazz funeral parade
The annual Joye in Aiken jazz music festival kicks off this week in downtown Aiken with a New Orleans-style jazz funeral parade.
The parade will take place Thursday at 5:30 p.m. This parade follows the recent Mardi Gras parade held by the Aiken Downtown Development Association.
“Anyone who attended the Mardi Gras Second Line Parade sponsored by the Aiken Downtown Development Association a few weeks ago knows how much fun this kind of event can be,” said Joye in Aiken Executive Director Janice Jennings. “We hope the whole community will help us continue the celebration by coming out for our New Orleans-style jazz funeral parade this Thursday, which is our own colorful way of kicking off the festival week.”
The parade route will begin at the fountain on Newberry Street before proceeding down Park Street and the Hayne Avenue Extension into the Alley.
Anyone who wants to join in the parade should line up at the Newberry Street fountain at 5:15 p.m. There is no registration or admission fee.
“We’ll have local jazz students performing with our visiting artists, lots of music and hats and beads, and even a horse-drawn caisson,” said Jennings.
This will be the first New Orleans-style jazz funeral parade held by Joye in Aiken.
