Underwood to host town hall Tuesday night at Sycamore High School

February 15, 2019

SYCAMORE – Lauren Underwood, Democratic congresswoman from Naperville who represents the 14th District, will be at Sycamore High School on Tuesday night for the latest of her town hall events.

Underwood will speak from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the high school, 427 Spartan Trail, according to a news release from her camp. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

Underwood has takens stances on gun laws, and President Donald Trump’s demand for a United States-Mexico border wall. Trump declared a national emergency Friday afternoon, in an effort to salvage funding and support for the wall.

“This declaration is an abuse of power that ignores the will of Congress – and the will of the people we represent,” Underwood’s statement reads. “It sets a dangerous precedent and is not an effective solution to this complicated issue. We have a humanitarian crisis at the border that should be solved with bipartisan, bicameral compromise in Congress including border security funding—which I voted for last night—and using resources to update ports of entry, add judges, and increase border surveillance.”

Underwood’s camp also put out a statement Thursday morning regarding the 11th anniversary of the fatal shooting Feb. 14, 2008, at Northern Illinois University:

“Eleven years later, the shooting at Northern Illinois University still weighs heavy on our community’s heart,” the release reads. “Since that tragic day, we’ve witnessed gun violence in our nation’s elementary schools, concerts, churches, and in Parkland – just last year on this very same day. My thoughts are with the families and neighbors of those who we have lost, but that is not enough. I came to Congress to act – this has to stop. That starts with strengthening federal gun laws and making sure everyone who buys a gun has had a background check.”
