US high school player dies of head injury
PHOENIX (AP) — A U.S. high school football player has died from a head injury sustained in a playoff game over the weekend.
The Arizona Interscholastic Association said Monday that Charles Youvella of Hopi High School died at a hospital of a traumatic brain injury.
Youvella, a senior, was injured in Hopi’s 60-6 loss to Arizona Lutheran on Saturday in the Arizona Division V first round playoffs. Youvella scored Hopi’s only touchdown in the game. Hopi High School is in Kearns Canyon, Arizona, on the Hopi Indian Reservation in northeastern Arizona.
Youvella’s father, Wallace, is a member of the Arizona Interscholastic Association. The AIA said Charles Youvella died with his family by his side.
The AIA said an account would be established to help with the Youvella family’s costs.
