Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department opens new Station No. 9
The Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department welcomes the community to celebrate Station No. 9’s new home in the Copperield area.
Firefighters finished moving equipment to the new station in December and are now gearing-up for their grand opening event on March 2.
CFVFD Station No. 9 was relocated from 7922 Hwy. 6 N. to 7188 Cherry Park Dr. to decrease the response times in the area said Scott DeBoer, Harris County Emergency Services District No. 9 commissioner. ESD No. 9 serves as a taxing district supporting CFVFD.
DeBoer said the station was moved to the new location, which is only approximately a mile from the old location, in order to meet construction codes and to better serve the community.
“It’s replacing a station that didn’t meet a lot of those state [building] codes and had gotten kind of run down and exceeded it’s lifespan,” he said. “To meet some of the new construction requirements and give the crews a better ability to still service during storms is pretty much the main reason for the construction and relocation.”
According to architects for the new station, the project costs totaled $6.9 million. The building is approximately 17,000 square feet and was completed by the contractor JE Dunn Construction in November 2018. The new station includes more parking for the public and department officials, additional storage, a decontamination room and multipurpose training room. Firefighters also have a day room and dining areas with space for working.
DeBoer said the station is very similar to the new Station No. 2, which opened May 2018. Station No. 2 was shifted in order to increase service ratings and improve coverage for residents on Hwy. 6 and in the FM 529 corridor.
“It played into the factor of Cy-Fair’s new insurance safety rating and was part of the strategic plan to minimize response times,” he said. “We were able to find that piece of land that met the stipulations in the area that we were needing to service. Station No. 2 helped move the geographical location of where [Station No.] 9 needed to be.”
The grand opening for Station No. 9 will take place March 2 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 7188 Cherry Park Dr. in Houston. CFVFD and ESD No. 9 encourage families to come and tour the station, see demonstrations and play in the bounce house. There will be a ribbon cutting and truck pushing ceremonies and refreshments.
