Rock 107 Cardboard Box Derby Challenges Racers To Build Unique Sleds

February 20, 2019

A quick trip to the craft store can help competitors slide into the winners’ circle.

The fourth annual Cardboard Box Derby, hosted by Times-Shamrock Communications radio station Rock 107 and Montage Mountain Resorts, challenges competitors to build sleds out of, yes, cardboard boxes for a chance to win more than $2,000 in prizes.

The event will take place Sunday, Feb. 24, at 7:30 a.m. at the resort, 1000 Montage Mountain Road, Scranton. Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m., and the first sled launches at 10:30.

“Every year it grows and we get bigger and better sleds. Some of our participants must spend hundreds of hours on this,” said Mark Hoover, Rock 107 promotions director.

Participants 10 and older can compete to build a sled that can cross the finish line with the most people inside or is the best concept sled, best Montage Mountain-themed sled or “epic fail” sled. Racers can only use four materials — tape, glue, string and cardboard — to create their sled, which must be 7-feet-wide or less. They also can use non-structural decorations — such as paint, Christmas lights and garland — to add a little character.

“This year we are looking for originality,” Hoover said. “Last year we had an ‘Animal House’ sled.”

Racers who cross the finish line from top to bottom with no restart or pushing on the course from any team members can win top prizes — Montage season memberships, gift cards and a variety of Montage vouchers.

Spectators can join the cold-weather fun at a snow-tubing party from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Refreshments including coffee, waffles, burgers, hot dogs and adult beverages will be available.

“I can’t wait to see what shows up this year on the slopes,” Hoover said. “And if you are working on a sled, please keep it a surprise.”
