Todd Bowles meets with Redskins: report

January 8, 2019

Former New York Jets coach Todd Bowles met with the Redskins earlier this week, according to a report from the NFL Network.

Bowles and the Redskins didn’t discuss a specificrole, but the Redskins are mulling changes to their coaching staff. It has not been decided if defensive coordinator Greg Manusky will return in 2019.

If the Redskins do have an opening at defensive coordinator, Bowles would make sense. Before joining the Jets in 2015, Bowles was regarded as one of the league’s best defensive coordinators when he was with the Arizona Cardinals.

Former #Jets coach Todd Bowles met with the #Redskins earlier this week, sources say. No specific role was discussed, Im told. It was more about touching base and seeing where things stood for both sides. As @RapSheet has noted, Bowles is in play in Tampa for Arians DC. Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) January 8, 2019

As a player, Bowles, a former safety, spent seven seasons with Washington over two stints starting Super Bowl XXII at free safety.

There is no guarantee, however, Bowles joins the Redskins. The coach could rejoin former Cardinals coach Bruce Arians in Tampa to be the Buccaneers’ defensive coordinator. Arians is seen as the front-runner to take over the Buccaneers’ job.

Bowles was fired by the Jets on Dec. 30 after the team finished the season 4-12. He was 24-40 with the Jets in four seasons.
