Amateur Update: Senior Softball Tournament returns to Rochester

August 22, 2018

Looking at our event calendar you will notice a ton of youth events, and rightfully so as there are more kids playing sports than adults. Also, kids travel with their whole families most of the time, so these events are good for area businesses.

However, we do have a few events that are geared toward adults as well. One in particular will be taking place at McQuillan Softball Complex this weekend: the Senior Softball USA (SSUSA) 10,000 Lakes Qualifier.

For the last several years, Rochester has played host to this event. Participating teams are automatically qualified to play in the SSUSA World Masters Championships in Las Vegas in late September and early October.

This year’s field for the 10, 000 Lakes Classic features 24 teams from Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin and age divisions of 50+, 55+, 60+, 65+ and 70+.

Senior Softball USA offers tournaments for teams that range from 40+ to 80+!

SSUSA events take place year-round, with many events hosted in Florida, California, and Arizona in the winter time. While the World Masters Championship in Vegas is a highlight for many teams, the Tournament of Champions (TOC) in Florida that takes place every February is where all the qualified winners go play.

In order to play in this event, a team has to win one of these designated TOC qualifiers.

We have tried to bring a Tournament of Champions event to Rochester in the past, as these events typically bring in between 50 and 60 teams.

The challenge with this is that the TOC events require that all fences are 300 feet. At McQuillan, the fences don’t quite make that requirement. Nonetheless, it will still be an exciting weekend down at the fields.

With many of these teams playing against each other year in and year out in Rochester, it turns into a reunion-like atmosphere. Hopefully the weather stays clear and we have a great time at the 10,000 Lakes Classic event.
