ISHIKAWAMACHI, Japan (AP) _ American David Ishii beat Australian Terry Gale 4 and 3 Thursday in the first round of the $400,000 Japan Professional Golfers Aassociation Match Play Championship.
In other matches on the par-72, 7,019-yard Green Academy Country Club, Japanese Masanobu Kimura and Yoshitaka Yamamoto, both prevailed by 1-up, Kimura over Australian Brian Jones and Yamamoto over Ian Baker-Finch, also of Australia.
Graham Marsh of Australia fared better, beating Japan’s Seiji Ebihara 3 and 2, and Taiwan’s Hsieh Min-nan downed Teruo Nakamura of Japan 3 and 2.
Also, Japan’s Isao Aoki beat Isamu Sugita 1-up and Masashi Ozaki beat Nobumitsu Yuhara 5 and 4.
The winner’s purse in the tournament, which concludes Sunday, is $112,000.
PESARO, Italy (AP) - Scavolini Pesaro overcame 29 points by former NBA scoring champion Bob McAdoo and upset Tracer Milan 90-82 Wednesday night in Game 1 of the best-of-five Italian major league basketball championship series.
Tracer, the defending Italian and European champion, trailed Scavolini 55-35 at the end of the first half before McAdoo helped rally Tracer to within eight points.
But Scavolini, led by former NBA players Darren Daye and Darwin Cook, managed to hold on before a sellout crowd of 5,000. Daye scored 23 points for the winners and Cook added 16.
Game 2 of the series is Saturday at Milan’s Palatrussardi Arena.
CATANZARO, Italy (AP) - Italy defeated Sweden 84-61 and the Netherlands downed Poland 58-52 Wednesday night in the first day of qualifying matches for the 1989 European women’s basketball championships.
In an earlier match Wednesday, Romania defeated Israel 64-59.
The top two teams at the end of the round-robin competition will qualify for the final round of the championships.
Italy, the Netherlands and Romania lead the standings with two points each. Sweden, Israel and Poland have zero points.
