Garbage Strike in Marseille Ends
MARSEILLE, France (AP) _ Garbage collectors ended a two-week strike in France’s largest port Tuesday and armed with shovels, big plastic bags and brooms, began removing huge piles of refuse dumped in the streets.
Employees of four independent garbage collection companies signed an agreement late Monday to increase staffing levels. Cleaning up the 3,000 tons of refuse was expected to take at least five days.
Garbage had reached waist-high levels in blistering heat, and restaurant owners had complained of seeing rats in the streets.
