“How CEOs Manage Time” by Michael E. Porter and Nitin Nohria Wins 60th Annual HBR McKinsey Award

April 16, 2019

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Apr 16, 2019--An in-depth examination of how CEOs allocate their scarcest resource – time – has won the 2018 HBR McKinsey Award, which honors the best Harvard Business Review article of the year.

How CEOs Manage Time ” by Michael E. Porter and Nitin Nohria draws on a 12-year study that is the first comprehensive and detailed investigation of CEO time use in large, complex companies over an extended period. Porter and Nohria collected 60,000 hours’ worth of data from 27 executives and interviewed them about their results and the implications. The resulting data set offers deep insights not only into best time-management practices but into the key trade-offs that CEOs need to manage. The findings have also been discussed with dozens of other CEOs participating in Harvard Business School’s workshop for newly appointed CEOs.

“Time management is a crucial issue in today’s high-pressure and fast-changing environment,” said Adi Ignatius, Editor in Chief of Harvard Business Review. “’ How CEOs Manage Time ’ offers a fascinating window into the demands and complexities of leading a company, and its insightful analysis can help all leaders who want to use their time and influence more effectively.”

Michael E. Porter is a University Professor at Harvard, based at Harvard Business School. Nitin Nohria is Dean of Harvard Business School.

The annual HBR McKinsey Awards, judged by an independent panel of business and academic leaders with input from members of HBR’s Advisory Board, commend outstanding articles published each year in Harvard Business Review. This year’s announcement appears in the May-June issue of the magazine.
