‘Teacher of the Year’ Nominee Charged
WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) _ A man nominated as teacher of the year was charged with impairing the morals of a minor after police seized from him 2,322 photographs of children and dozens of pairs of boys’ underwear.
Roger E. Niland, 43, of Watertown was released on $50,000 bond after appearing Friday in Waterbury Superior Court. The 15-year veteran of the Wolcott school system could face up to 10 years in prison and a $500 fine if convicted, authorities said.
The art teacher waived extradition Thursday from South Dakota where he was arrested Aug. 23 while on a camping trip with three children, police said.
Niland was nominated as Wolcott’s teacher of the year in 1984.
The school board this week moved to fire Niland, who has 20 days to appeal the dismissal.
