HUNTINGTON – Former Marshall quarterback Michael Payton died at the age of 48 on Thursday morning following a battle with cancer.

The Harrisburg, Pa., native’s passing was confirmed by his brother, David, Thursday afternoon.

“He went home to be with the Lord and reunited with our Mom,” David Payton said by message. “Blessings.”

Payton was one of Marshall’s all-time greats, leading the Herd to its first-ever Division I-AA Championship in 1992.

For his efforts, Payton earned the Walter Payton Award in 1992, which is the FCS (formerly Division I-AA) version of the Heisman Trophy. In that season, he threw for 3,610 yards and 31 touchdowns with just 12 interceptions.

Payton was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in January 2015. He also is a member of the Class of 1999 in Marshall University’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
