SAN DIEGO (AP) — A biologist at the renowned Salk Institute in Southern California has resigned after allegations that he sexually harassed at least eight women over three decades.

The institute in San Diego says Inder Verma tendered his resignation last week and the Board of Trustees unanimously accepted it on Monday.

Verma is internationally known for his research on genetics and cancer.

In an April article in the journal Science, eight women alleged that Verma had sexually harassed them as far back as 1976. They alleged that he forced kisses on women, pinched their behinds and touched their breasts.

The 70-year-old scientist denied the allegations but was placed on leave while the claims were investigated.
