Free Comic Book Day, Star Wars Day celebrated Saturday
Sometimes the stars, or the galaxies far, far away, align in exactly the right way.
This Saturday is one of those times.
Saturday is not only Free Comic Book Day, but also Star Wars Day.
Get it? May 4, as in “May the Fourth Be With You”?
To celebrate, area comic book and game shops have a day jam-packed with freebies, sales and demos.
At both Comic Book Shop locations and Merlyn’s Comics and Games, customers can choose three free comics from this year’s Free Comic Book Day releases.
Vinny Paganelli, “resident nerd” at the Comic Book Shop can see “Star Wars Adventures: Droid Hunters” being a popular choice.
“On the back of it, it’s got this beautiful picture of Vader that has ‘May the Fourth Be With You’ on there,” he said. “That’s the one I’m looking forward to.”
He can also see patrons snatching up copies of two DC offerings, which are both the first chapters of new graphic novels: “Dear Justice League,” a kid-friendly Justice League, and “Under the Moon: A Catwoman Tale.”
Paganelli also said the Comic Book Shop will have copies of Marvel’s “The Avengers” and “Spider-Man,” which sets up a new storyline in the Spider-Man series.
Merlyn’s manager Charles Faust also thinks “Star Wars Adventures” and the Marvel releases will be popular, along with “Welcome to Whedonverse,” which features “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Firefly,” two TV shows created by Joss Whedon.
“Both of those properties are huge among comic book, nerdy people,” he said. “That one is probably going to be a really big deal. That will probably run out pretty fast.”

At Comic Book Shop locations, customers can take part in a Pokemon Trainer’s Academy, join in a Magic the Gathering open house, and pick up special product releases,
including a special DC Comics Year of the Villain comic for only 25 cents, a new Marvel series, “Savage Avengers #1,” a “Stranger Things”-themed Dungeons and Dragons starter set, Detective Pikachu product and a new Pokemon set, “Unbroken Bonds,” featuring a new Charizard.
All locations will also offer 20% off Star Wars products in celebration of Star Wars Day. At the Northtown Mall location, the costumed 501st Havoc Squad will be available for photos.
The Northtown location will host a KuroNekoCon-sponsored cosplay contest. Merlyn’s also plans a costume contest. Everyone who’s dressed up will get their picture taken, which is then posted on Facebook for a public vote.
“The costume contest is always one of our favorite parts,” Faust said.
The store will also offer 30% off comic-related books, toys, HeroClix, games and more during the weekend. There will be
game demos too.
Neither Paganelli or Faust could recall if Free Comic Book Day and Star Wars Day had ever fallen on the same day before, but both agree that it makes this year’s celebration a little more special.
“It’s always very busy and it’s always a lot of fun,” Faust said. “It’s sort of like a Black Friday of comic book stores.”
Triple Play Family Fun Park, located at 175 W. Orchard Ave., Hayden, will host a “May the Fourth Be With You” fundraiser on Saturday. Up to 40% of each ticket benefits Children’s Village.
