Gunman Killed in Calif. Standoff

April 21, 2001

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) _ A man who barricaded himself in a home with two girls was shot to death by police after they stormed the residence. Five people, including a child and three officers, were wounded.

The man, who was not identified, was pronounced dead at the scene while the others were taken to hospitals for injuries that were not life-threatening, said Long Beach police spokeswoman Karen Owens.

The standoff began around 7:20 p.m. when a patrol officer saw a man on the street and ``heard a noise that sounded like firecrackers,″ Owens said. When the officer approached the man, he fired and wounded him in the cheek, she said.

The man then fled to a nearby house, where authorities said a man and two girls, ages 10 and 7, were inside.

``He shot the man in the left shoulder and forced him out of the house,″ Owens said. ``Then he barricaded himself inside.″

Within minutes, police and a SWAT team arrived and stormed into the home to rescue the girls. Owens said they were concerned because ``he was firing inside the home and outside at patrol and SWAT officers on the perimeter.″

The 10-year-old girl was hit in the right wrist and two officers outside were struck, one in the foot and the other in the arm.

Once officers broke in they exchanged several rounds of gunfire with the man, fatally wounding him.
