LONDON (AP) _ American midfielder Eddie Lewis set up the first goal and scored the second as Preston North End beat Birmingham City 2-0 Tuesday night in the third round of England’s League Cup.
Ricardo Fuller gave Preston a 1-0 lead in the 59th minute off Lewis’ cross. Lewis, a member of the U.S. World Cup team, scored his first goal in 11 appearances this season for first-division Preston in the 80th minute after receiving a pass 25 yards from the goal.
Jovan Kirovski, an alternate for the U.S. World Cup team, came in as a second-half substitute for Birmingham, a Premier League team.
Manchester City, another Premier League team, lost 1-0 at second-division Wigan. David Beckham scored on a penalty kick as Manchester United beat first-division Leicester 2-0.
Rotherham won 3-1 at fellow first-division team Wimbledon before only 664 fans. A week earlier, Wimbledon played Rotherham at Selhurst Park and drew only 849 fans _ the smallest crowd ever at a first-division game.
The lack of support stems from the controversial decision in May to allow Wimbledon to relocate to Milton Keynes, 70 miles northwest of its London base. Fans are vehemently against the idea and are boycotting games.
