It’s Powerball for moose: Big game at stake in moose lottery
SCARBOROUGH, Maine (AP) — Mainers are ready for their annual celebration of moose, which is also the day hunters find out who will be able to pursue the animals later this year.
The 2019 Maine Moose Lottery & Festival is taking place at Cabela’s in Scarborough on Saturday. The lottery for moose hunting permits attracts tens of thousands of applications, though only 2,820 permits are available.
The number of permits available this is a slight increase from last year’s hunt.
The moose season is scheduled to begin on Sept. 23 this year. It takes place during four sessions of varying lengths, which are limited to different parts of the state. The longest stretch runs from Nov. 4 to Nov. 30, which is the last day of the hunt.
