Mary Alice Jensen -- Sargeant

January 28, 2019

Alice Jensen, 81, of rural Sargeant passed away peacefully on Jan. 25, 2019, at Prairie Meadows in Kasson after a courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia.

(Mary) Alice Hatten was born on June 20, 1937 in Carroll, Iowa, to Arnold and Walburga (Rahe) Hatten. They later moved to the Brownsdale/Austin area. She graduated from Pacelli High School and went to work at the Mower County Courthouse.

Alice married Richard Jensen of Sargeant on May 28, 1960, and became a stay-at-home mom. She was very active through the years working with the Mower County 4-H Program, Rural Youth and Sargeant Township Board. Alice was also the secretary at Evanger Lutheran Church for more than 40 years.

Alice’s passion was working with the American Legion Auxiliary, both at the local Hayfield Post 330 and District levels. Her favorite projects were the local spelling bee which she initiated, and the Minnesota Girls State program.

Alice enjoyed playing cards, gardening, quilting, dancing to old time music, reading, traveling and puzzles — crossword, jigsaw and word searches.

Alice is survived by her husband Richard of nearly 59 years and children, Cheryl (Philip) Woodward of Pine Island, Linda (Rich Snyder) Jensen of Phoenix, Ariz., Mike (Betsy) Jensen of San Jose, Calif., and Grant (Scott Neitzel) Jensen of Afton, Minn. She is also survived by grandchildren, Billy, Claire, Tegan, Tyler, Sam and Riley. Alice’s surviving siblings include Phil Hatten, Dave Hatten, Joe Hatten, Barb Mensink and Margie Sprick.

She is preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Gene Hatten, Janet Hatten, Georgia Schramm, Don Hatten and Dan Hatten.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, at Evanger Lutheran Church, 33554 660th Ave. in Sargeant. Burial will follow at the church cemetery immediately afterward.

Visitation for Alice will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at Czaplewski Funeral Home, 501 Second St. NW in Hayfield and one hour prior to the funeral service on Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to the Hayfield American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship Program or the Minnesota Girls State program.

The family would like to express its thanks to the Prairie Meadows and St. Croix Hospice staff members for the excellent care you provided to Alice. You made her very happy and comfortable all the way through her journey.

Blessed be her memory.
