Vermont health officials report drug overdose spike
BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Vermont health officials say there have been at least seven drug overdoses reported in the Burlington area in just over 12 hours and they are waiting for laboratory results to determine what substance is responsible.
Health Commissioner Dr. Mark Levine said Friday seven overdoses were reversed beginning at 11 p.m. Thursday. Four additional overdoses were reported throughout Chittenden County. In a typical night, two overdoses are reported.
Levine says there have been no reports of fatalities.
Levine says it’s too early to say what is responsible for the overdoses beyond opioid drugs.
Levine and University of Vermont Medical Center President Eileen Whalen say resources are available to help addicts.
Doctors are reminding drug users that the overdose reversal drug Narcan is available at doctors’ offices or the emergency department.
