Carson-Newman 37, W. Georgia 26
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) _ Carson-Newman defensive back Jesse Brown blocked an extra point that would have tied the game, ending a second-half comeback by West Georgia Saturday in the Eagles’ 37-26 victory in the first round of the NCAA Division II playoffs.
Brown’s block of Jeremy Coates’ kick launched a final Carson-Newman scoring blitz that included quarterback Matt Penland’s second touchdown of the game on a one-yard run up the middle.
Bryan Standfest capped off Eagle scoring with a 34-yard field goal in the last quarter, his third of the day.
Carson-Newman (South Atlantic Conference) improved to 9-2 and faces North Alabama next Saturday in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals.
West Georgia (Gulf South Conference) ended its season 8-3 following its first-ever meeting with Carson-Newman.
After taking a 27-7 lead at the break, the Eagles came out flat, allowing West Georgia to get as close as 27-26 early in the fourth quarter. But the blocked kick by Brown gave momentum back to the Eagles and stopped the Braves’ offensive steam.
