Man Arrested in Alleged Traci Lords Porn Sale
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ A man has been arrested and charged with selling 18 video movies made by porn star Traci Lords while she was a minor, authorities said Friday.
Douglas Harrison Knapp, 37, of Marina Del Rey, was charged Thursday with one misdemeanor count of selling material featuring a person under age 17 engaged in sexual acts, said spokesman Mike Qualls.
Police vice officers saw an advertisement last month for the Traci Lords tapes in a classified ads tabloid, Qualls said. The ad indicated that the videotapes were on sale for $1,200.
Investigators said they called Knapp and arranged an Aug. 8 meeting at the corner of Beverly Boulevard and La Brea Avenue in Hollywood. Vice officers purchased the tapes for $1,000 and arrested Knapp.
Knapp was booked and released on $500 bail. He will be arraigned Sept. 24. If convicted, Knapp could receive a one-year jail term and a $2,000 fine.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office has taken over the investigation of Miss Lords’ career from the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office.
The action was taken Thursday because the case is more easily prosecuted under federal rather than state statutes, said district attorney’s spokesman Schuyler Sprowles.
Miss Lords’ real name is Norma Kuzma. She was born May 7, 1968, and grew up in Steubenville, Ohio. She moved to Redondo Beach with her family in 1982.
She allegedly used a phony birth certificate and California identification card with a birthdate of Nov. 17, 1962, to begin working for pornographic filmmakers in the San Fernando Valley.
Criminal charges won’t be filed against Miss Lords, who turned 18 last May, District Attorney Ira Reiner said recently.
