Doctors Investigating Mystery Disease That Killed Four Toddlers
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) _ The government sent a team of doctors Tuesday to investigate a mysterious disease that has killed four toddlers at a state hospital.
All victims were younger than two years old and live in eastern Suriname, which neighbors Guyana.
The Ministry of Health sent a medical team to investigate the illness that first was recorded in mid-October, said Chief Medical Officer Edward Sagala.
``They develop this high fever, vomiting, convulsions and, by the time you control the fever, they are gone,″ said Sagala. ``We are monitoring the situation closely, but so far we can’t pin it down.″
He said four children have died and 10 others are being treated in New Amsterdam Hospital. New Amsterdam is 75 miles east of Georgetown.
The ministry also sent doctors to Skeldon, on Guyana’s border with Suriname, 50 miles east of New Amsterdam, where two of the children fell ill.
Samples of body fluids from the victims are being sent to the Caribbean Epidemiology Center in Trinidad and Tobago for testing.
