Deutsche Telekom: Cable & Wireless Link “Possible″
FRANKFURT (AP) _ The chief financial officer of Germany’s Deutsche Telekom AG said the company could be interested in a link-up with Britain’s Cable & Wireless.
But other companies are also under consideration for an alliance with the German state-owned telecommunications group, which plans an initial public offering in November, chief financial officer Joachim Kroeske told journalists in Frankfurt late Thursday.
``There is hardly a company that we aren’t talking with,″ he said. ``We need more time to figure out which constellation is possible and can be financed.″
Industry observers have suggested Deutsche Telekom would be interested in Cable & Wireless’ British affiliate Mercury Communications Ltd. rather than Cable & Wireless itself, but Telekom had never confirmed that.
``I don’t think a takeover of Cable & Wireless by Telekom is necessarily the one that will happen,″ Kroeske said. ``There are other possibilities.″
In the near term, Deutsche Telekom plans to announce it is buying into several Southeast Asian companies, Kroeske said. Southeast Asia is attractive because it is a rapidly growing market, he said.
