Top seed upset in USTA Grass Court tourney

LAWRENCE, N.Y. (AP) _ Fifth-seeded Jim Perley of Coronado, Calif., upset top-seeded and defending champion Bob Duesler of Newport Beach, Calif., 6-4, 6-4 Friday to advance to the 60 semifinals in the USTA Grass Court Championships.

Perley will oppose Gene Scott of New York, a former Davis Cup player who eliminated Joe Martin of Morrison, Colo., 6-3, 6-4.

In the other quarterfinals, No. 10 Leslie Dodson of Kalamazoo, Mich., surprised No. 7 Leonard Lindborg of South Laguna, Calif., 6-1, 6-3, while No. 8 Jim Nelson of Irvine, Calif., outlasted Elmer Mangrum of San Jose, Calif., 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 6-4.

In 65 singles, No. 1 Russell Seymour of Flint, Texas, beat No. 7 Richard Olson of Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., 6-2, 6-1 and will face No. 3 Whitney Reed of Mountain Lake Terrace, Wash., a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) winner over Ari Arichandran of Bethesda, Md.

No. 6 King Lambert of Sun Valley, Idaho, eliminated No. 2 Chuck Devoe of Indianapolis 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, and No. 8 Ernie Schultz of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., defeated Jan Lindstedt of McLean, Va., 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

No. 1 Graydon Nichols of Hanford, Calif., beat No. 7 Ronald Plater of Evergreen, Colo., 6-2, 6-3 in 75 singles and faces No. 6 Ed Kauder, also of Sun Valley, who upset No. 4 Robin Willner of Palm Desert, Calif., 6-2, 6-3.

No. 2 Fred Kovaleski of New York was a 6-4, 6-0 winner over Newt Meade of Thornton, Pa., and meets No. 3 Bill Tully of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., who beat Lyn Abbot of Venice, Fla., 6-0, 6-1.
