UK leader: Northern Ireland should be included in TV debates

January 26, 2015

LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister David Cameron says Northern Ireland should be included in United Kingdom-wide television debates in the run-up to the U.K. general election in May.

Cameron’s intervention Monday highlighted bitter arguments over who should be allowed to participate in two TV debates planned for April. Both broadcasters involved, the BBC and ITN, have infuriated Northern Ireland First Minister Peter Robinson by planning to invite seven party leaders from England, Scotland and Wales — but nobody from Northern Ireland.

Robinson sent a legally threatening letter to the two broadcasters Friday noting that his Democratic Unionist Party is the fourth-largest in the House of Commons and must be included.

Cameron said Robinson had a stronger case to be involved than parties with fewer parliamentary seats, including Welsh and Scottish nationalists.
