Nancy Pelosi: Some wanted to ‘impeach the president since the day he got elected’
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi dismissed any renewed talk of pursuing impeachment this week, doubling down on her opposition to prematurely removing President Trump.
In an interview with USA Today released Wednesday, the top-ranking Democrat said some progressives have been itching to “impeach the president since the day he got elected.”
Mrs. Pelosi appeared to tamp down the enthusiasm for impeachment earlier this month after telling The Washington Post it was “just not worth it.”
Most Democrats followed suit, saying it was too early to consider invoking articles of impeachment, and the investigative process should be completed first.
She left the door open to possibly pursuing impeachment after the special counsel investigation concludes, but only if the evidence was substantial enough.
Mrs. Pelosi stuck to that this week, emphasizing that her party needs to stay focused on their legislative agenda or hand a victory over to the GOP.
“You’re wasting your time, unless the evidence is so conclusive that the Republicans will understand,” she said. “Otherwise, it’s a gift to the president. We take our eye off the ball.”
