TOKYO (AP) _ A U.S. Navy sailor was arrested Sunday and charged with assaulting and attempting to rob a restaurant owner, police said.
Petty Officer 2nd Class Christopher Downs, 23, who is serving aboard the U.S. aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk, was charged with theft and assault, a Yokosuka city police official said on condition of anonymity. He didn’t know Downs’ hometown.
Downs allegedly accosted 68-year-old Shigeru Abe at his apartment and told him to hand over cash, the official said.
When Abe refused, Downs allegedly punched him in the face and head several times and then fled without taking anything, the official said. He was chased by Abe’s neighbors to within 200 yards of the U.S. Navy’s Yokosuka base and held until police arrived, the official said.
The Kitty Hawk, docked at the Yokosuka base, is the only American carrier stationed in the western Pacific. It has a crew of 5,500 and typically carries about 70 aircraft.
Yokosuka is 28 miles southwest of Tokyo.
