Bridgeport PD: Man dies after being hit by SUV
BRIDGEPORT — A man was fatally hit by a Sport Utility Vehicle in the city late Wednesday night after collapsing in the street, police Chief Armando Perez said Thursday.
The man killed was 48-year-old Derek Franklin, Perez said. He had no permanent address, but had connections to several Connecticut cities including Bridgeport, Hartford and Waterbury.
Franklin was someone Bridgeport police were familiar with, Perez said.
Around 10 p.m. Wednesday, Franklin collapsed in the street near the intersection of Barnum Avenue and Helen Street from what seemed to be some kind of medical incident, the chief said.
“There were a couple of good Samaritans that stopped to help him out,” Perez said.
A woman driving down the street in her SUV saw the people who were nearby trying to help Franklin, but didn’t see him in the street and ran him over. Perez said Franklin was trapped under the SUV when first responders arrived.
Firefighters were able to free the man from under the SUV within minutes.
“He could not overcome the injuries,” Perez said of Franklin. He died Wednesday night.
The driver of the SUV, a Massachusetts resident who also has a place in Bridgeport, stayed at the scene and cooperated with police, the chief said.
“I don’t think she was familiar with the area,” Perez said. “It was an accident. She felt really, really awful.”
As of Thursday, police had not charged the woman who hit Franklin. The incident remains under investigation by the police department’s traffic division and the fatal team.
