Storm Forces Sports Postponements

January 3, 1999

A winter storm forced the postponement of several sports events Saturday, including a Big 10 basketball game _ No. 16 Minnesota at No. 11 Purdue.

The game was rescheduled for Sunday night.

Other college basketball games postponed included Houston-DePaul, Villanova-Notre Dame, Wright State-Loyola, Butler-Illinois Chicago and Northern Illinois-Ball State.

The weather also forced the postponement of thoroughbred racing at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky., an Ontario Hockey League game between Windsor and Sarnia, and Minnesota’s wrestling match in Minneapolis against Iowa State.

The National Professional Soccer League game between the Philadelphia Kixx and the Detroit Rockers also was postponed.

Other events went on despite the weather, which resulted in more than a foot of snow in many parts of the Midwest. In St. Louis, where 8 inches had fallen by early evening, 14,009 saw the Blues lose 1-0 to the New York Rangers, but 5,251 hockey fans stayed away.

The U.S. Sprint Speedskating championships began in Roseville, Minn., with competitors battling snow and wind on an outdoor rink.
