City looks at buying golf course
The city of Fort Wayne is in negotiations to purchase 142 acres of land now occupied by Lakeside Golf Club, a city official has confirmed.
Frank Suarez, spokesman for Fort Wayne’s Division of Public Works and City Utilities, said the purchase is being undertaken to improve stormwater management and help protect upstream neighborhoods from flooding, especially those along the Pierson Ditch in northeast Fort Wayne.
Lakeside, which has an 18-hole and a 9-hole golf course, is owned by Riverview Inc. The course’s address is 746 Coliseum Blvd. N., south of Lake Avenue.
The course is one of several whose land in recent years has been sold for other purposes, including housing developments.
Suarez said buildings and a parking lot were not part of negotiations. The property also has a bowling center.
He said the owners approached the city in 2015, but deliberations were not complete.
“After reviewing the location, City Utilities believed it was mutually beneficial to begin negotiations. The transaction will go before the Board of Public Works and the Fort Wayne City Council within the next few weeks,” Suarez said.
Adam Henry, a Fort Wayne attorney representing Riverview, said the public course has been popular with residents, often earning honors in Fort Wayne Newspapers’ Readers Choice awards.
He said it was too early to say what plans for the tract might be.
