Ironton beats Oaks, wins first sectional since 2015

The Herald-Dispatch JACKSON, Ohio - Ironton won its first boys high school basketball sectional championship since 2015 Friday when it defeated Oak Hill 44-25 in the Division III, Jackson 4 finals at Jackson High School. The Fighting Tigers earned a berth in the Athens District semifinals at 3 p.m. March 2 vs. Adena at Ohio University’s Convocation Center. Ironton led 12-2 after one quarter and never was seriously challenged, building the lead to 24-9 by halftime and 34-14 by the end of the third quarter. <ct:Bold>WHEELERSBURG 35, MEIGS 28: <ct:>The top-seeded and Division III state third-ranked Pirates outlasted the No. 8 seed Marauders in the Jackson 1 sectional championship game. Wheelersburg advances to the district semifinals at 6:30 p.m. March 2 in Athens against the winner of Saturday’s game featuring North Adams and Piketon. <ct:Bold>JOHNSON CENTRAL 69, PAINTSVILLE 56:<ct:> The Golden Eagles outscored the Tigers 40-23 in the second half to win their fourth consecutive Kentucky 57th District championship. Cory Vanhoose led Johnson Central with 29 points. Gabe Ferrell scored 17 and Jacob Rice 16. Colby Fugate paced Paintsville with 24 points. Braxton Tharp scored 10. Nick Keeton grabbed 12 rebounds. <ct:Bold>ADENA 57, PORTSMOUTH 54:<ct:> The top-seeded Warriors survived a scare from the eighth-seeded Trojans in the Ohio Division III, Waverly 1 sectional finals at the Waverly Downtown Arena. Adena moves on to face Ironton at 3 p.m. March 2 in the district semifinals at Ohio University’s Convocation Center in Athens. Ironton defeated Oak Hill on Friday to win the Jackson 4 sectional title. Zah Fout and Logan Bennett led the Warriors with 16 points each. Preston Sykes scored 15. Danny Lattimore scored 14 to lead Portsmouth. <ct:Bold>THURSDAY GAMES BOYS CAPITAL 88, HUNTINGTON HIGH 41:<ct:> Karrington Hills 13 points paced the Cougars (17-4) to a home win on Senior Night. Tayon English and Jay Fannin each scored 11 and Ethan Kent 10. Dion Sims scored 13 for the Highlanders (8-14). <ct:Bold>RIPLEY 71, POINT PLEASANT 56:<ct:> Ty Johnson scored 21 and Isaac Putnam 20 as the visiting Vikings (12-9) defeated the Big Blacks (6-15). Hunter Bush and Kyelar Morrow each scored 18 to lead Point Pleasant. <ct:Bold>FEDERAL HOCKING 54, SYMMES VALLEY 51:<ct:> The eighth-seeded Lancers defeated the seventh-seeded Vikings in a Division IV, Meigs 1 sectional semifinal in Pomeroy, Ohio. Federal Hocking advanced to Tuesday’s 6 p.m. finals against top-seeded Coal Grove. <ct:Bold>GIRLS WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE 60, MEIGS 49: <ct:>The second-seeded Blue Lions (19-5) beat the Marauders (15-9) in a Division II district semifinal at Southeastern High School in Londonderry, Ohio. Hannah Haithcock led Washington Court House, which plays top-seeded Vinton County for the title on Thursday, with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Rayana Burns scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
