PTA President Charged in Death of Infant in her Care
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ A PTA president who cared for children in her home has been charged with murder in the death of a 9-month-old boy who suffered a fractured skull while in her care.
Debra Cummings, 32, of Reseda, pleaded innocent Friday in Van Nuys Municipal Court. Cummings, the mother of a 6-year-old girl and the president of the Shirley Avenue Elementary School Parent Teachers Association, was ordered held without bail.
The infant, Kevin Young, was in Cummings’ care almost daily for six months.
Cummings told police that Kevin, who died June 16 at a hospital, apparently fell and hit his head on a coffee table while she was in another room. But a coroner’s report concluded the baby was hit with hands or fists.
Authorities said they were investigating the death of another child who died in Cummings’ care. Fourteen-month-old Matthew Cooley lost consciousness while he was at a park with Cummings last March. His doctor said his death was the result of a seizure.
