Government Seizes Trucks for Relief Supply
KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) _ The Cabinet on Thursday ordered the seizure of all trucks of five-ton capacity or larger to haul relief supplies to drought areas.
Lt. Gen. Abbas Medani, the Interior Minister, announced the order in a statement read over the state radio.
The official Sudan News Agency said violators would be subject to punishments stipulated in the state of emergency act, which has been in effect since the military took power April 6 in a bloodless coup. It did not specify the punishments.
Relief supplies for drought victims have been accumulating in Sudan’s ports because of a lack of trucks, shortage of fuel and the limited capacity of the rail system. Recent heavy rain has also prevented trucks from reaching the refugee camps.
